New: Intro to Hydroponics-Build an indoor grow system
Instructor: Tyler Reed
Learn the basic of hydroponic food production and then build your own personal system in this immersive, hands-on experience. In the first half of the class, you will learn:
- The basics of hydroponic system operation and common components
- Various hydroponic techniques including Flood and Drain, NFT and Aeroponics
- Different lighting options such as type, intensity and spectrum
- Nutrient options and delivery mechanisms.
Then we’ll go hands-on where students will build their own personal hydroponic systems using a pvc frame and rain gutter as a growth channel. Simple plumbing and lighting will be used to build a system in which the student can grow fresh herbs and leafy greens year-round in any location. All materials will be supplied, including a light, reservoir, pump, hoses, construction materials and growing medium. The students will not need to bring any tools.
We will end the class with a survey of automation technology, expansion options and limitations, an overview of food preservation techniques and a brief discussion on aquaponics.
