New: Create an Indoor/Outdoor Table & Bench Set
Interdisciplinary: woodworking, metal fabrication & MIG welding
Instructors: Matt Hatcher, Todd Perkins, Matt Bowman.
In this three-part class, learn skills in three different tool areas: wood shop, metal fabrication, and MIG welding to create your own modern indoor/outdoor table set.
Instructors Matt Hatcher, Todd Perkins and Matt Bowman will show students how to build a simple, durable, outdoor/indoor table with matching bench seats.
One evening, students will learn how to prepare rough sawn pine and assemble solid blocks for the table tops and bench seats. The second evening, students will weld the steel tube frames for the supports. The third session addresses finishing both materials for outdoor use and final assembly.
Class features the use of locally sourced, Ohio grown wood and all materials costs are included in the class fee.
New: LED Desk Lamp: Welding & Electronics Project
Interdisciplinary: Learn metal fabrication, MIG welding, electronics soldering, & Arduino embedded control
Get a functional introduction to both MIG welding & embedded control electronics using Arduino while making a modern-inspired LED desk lamp.
Students will learn metal fabrication basics: using angle grinders, plasma torch and MIG welding to build the metal lamp. We’ll also cover safety, proper welding techniques, machine set-up, material prep and finishing.
The second session, students will learn the basics of the embedded control Arduino platform, covering basic soldering and programming to develop an on/off and brightness control mechanism for the LEDs.
Intro to MIG & Plasma, Mini Grill
This class is intended for beginner welders and those looking to brush up on rusty skills while building something fun and useful. The class will involve basic fabrication technique, using plasma cutters, mig welders, and grinders. Students will use these to cut parts, tack-weld into place, fully weld, and grind all corners smooth. Each student will make and take home a small grill.
Completion of this class qualifies members to rent the welder/welding area in the future for other projects. After completing this class you will be able to walk up to any MIG welder in our shop and set it up to properly weld on your own. This class focuses on MIG welding carbon steel, the principles apply to other metals and alloys but may require additional instruction.
TIG Welding Instruction
This workshop covers the basics of how to TIG weld. TIG welding is a versatile and precise way of welding in which the resulting welds are both aesthetically and structurally sound. The workshop will cover how to properly setup the machine for welding mild carbon steel and stainless steel. Time will be spent on how to prepare the material properly and how to setup the machine to get the optimal weld produced.
TIG instruction is offered for one to two students at a time, privately with the instructor, at a rate of $50/hour. Depending on the previous experience of the student, a basic level introduction to TIG should take approximately 4-5 hours.
Each person taking a private workshop will have plenty of hands on practice as they are guided through the do’s and don’ts of TIG welding. Each participant will learn to lay down a weld bead on flat plate stock and then learn how to successfully join plates together at a different array of angles and welding scenarios.
Email our Shop Manager, Matt Hatcher at email@example.com to schedule private instruction.
