Join CIF, CORMUG, and MAKE Magazine
for an international 3D printing meetup!
Thursday, November 15, 8-10pm, at the Columbus Idea Foundry,
It’s official! As of 9pm EST we are the #1 worldwide maker-meetup, with 67 RSVPs! Read about the event here!
Make Magazine recently put out a call for coordinated, global meetups to take place on the subject of 3D printing. We’ve decided to answer that call. And for good reason! For the past three years the Columbus Idea Foundry has been home to a monthly 3D Printing Meetup, organized by the members of CORMUG (the Central Ohio Reprap and Makerbot Operators User Group). This month we’ll be double-dipping, holding our regular meetup on Wednesday, in addition to celebrating on Thursday — along with over a hundred different makerspaces and hackerspaces around the world.
At the time of writing this, the Columbus Idea Foundry has 48 RSVPs for this event, putting us neck-and-neck with New York for first place! That also means we’re well within grasp of MAKE’s prize for the top-3 events! The competition ends tonight at 9pm EST. You can find more details, and RSVP below.
As usual, bring your bots, your questions, and your enthusiasm! Whether you’re a designer, inventor, hacker, tinkerer or weekend DIYer — anyone interested in finding out more about 3D printing and design is welcome!
Starting at 8pm we’ll be demo-ing our printers and tinkering with our builds.
At 9pm (EST) we’ll be joining makers and makerspaces around the world in live-streaming a Google+ Hangout with the editors of MAKE. They recently compared 15 of the top 3D printers and subjected them to all sorts of metrics and torture tests, and they’re releasing a guide to definitively answer your questions about how to choose a 3D printer that suits your interests, your needs, and your budget. They’ll also be answering questions, and offering tips and hints. Join us at the Columbus Idea Foundry, or tune in on your own (https://plus.google.com/+MAKE/posts).
Participants will receive a free pdf copy of the unreleased Make: Ultimate Guide to 3D Printing, a 3D printer buyer’s guide that’ll be hitting newsstands soon. The issue includes gobs of useful resources, including the results of their comparison tests, comprehensive articles about software (CAD, CAM), lists of materials, and options for scanning objects.
Help us put Columbus on the Map! The top-three best attended meetups will receive swag (and bragging rights) curtsey of MAKE, including a $200 stipend for beverages and food. At last count the Columbus Idea Foundry was tied with NYC for first place, with 48 RSVPs for this event. It’s free, so Register Now!
Update: We’ve still got until 9pm EST tonight (11/14/2012) to win the the competition for Top 3! But we’ve already won a prize: as one of the first 25 groups to organize a meetup, we will be receiving a MAKE meetup welcome kit that includes 12 copies of the “MAKE: Ultimate Guide to 3D Printing,” MAKE T-shirts, notebooks, stickers, and buttons!
This isn’t the only worldwide meetup we’re doing this week! You can also join us on Saturday for our Raspberry Jam event, a meetup for enthusiasts of the Raspberry Pi, an innovative new $35 dollar single-board computer. Come jam with us!
