Creative Coding

Description:

This workshop is geared toward making a piece of generative art using Processing.

It would be helpful if you have programmed at a very basic level and understand what variables, if statements and for loops are-- BUT we’ll take it from the beginning and get you where you need to be.  You should have a basic understanding of what different image types are (vector vs. bitmap, jpg, png, etc.)

We’re going to deconstruct a few pieces that already work so you can see how to make your own.

Our pieces are intended to be projected on a wall or gallery space.

This is a 2 hour class that meets for 3 sessions:  Mondays, February 4th, 11th, and 18th from 7-9pm.

You will need to have Processing installed on your computer before you come to class.  (www.processing.org) If you need help, please contactjennifer@ittybittystudio.com and plan to come in an hour early so that we don’t spend class time troubleshooting installation.  (OR you can rent a computer for the session.)

You should plan on working on your project for 2-4 hours outside of class, to get the most from this workshop. :)

Week 1:

  • Walk through some examples of generative code that already work.  What are the parts?  How is it structured?
  • We will look at 3 different designs.
    • Basic programming concepts introduced
      • Variables and variable types,
      • Functions, loops and conditional statements
    • Deconstruct a couple working examples.
  • Syntax.  How to speak the language - being one with the computer.
  • Start changing up the design so that you can make your own.
  • Talk about testing, compiling and debugging... Take it one step at a time.

Week 2:

  • Working session. Given what you know, what can we create?
  • Paper-and-pen algorithm writing session.
  • Define what’s supposed to happen for your design, then we’ll go about writing the code.

Week 3:

  • Show off your designs and get a little critique.
  • Discussion about projection and digital displays.
  • What are some best practices and considerations for installing this sort of art in an outdoor space versus a gallery space?
  • Continue working on your piece with guided help and feedback.

Bring - a USB drive.  A computer, if you have one.
Install the latest build of Processing on your computer prior to class.  (www.processing.org) If you need help, please meet half-an-hour before the start of the first class to do so
