Corel for the Laser Cutter

Description:

Instructor: Richard Bowers

Corel Draw is the gateway software to the CIF laser cutter.  You can create graphics in other programs, or completely in Corel, but they must be imported into Corel Draw in order to access the laser and engrave or cut material there.

This class is a brief introduction Corel Draw. Discussion focuses on ways to create and convert images, and to transfer those images to the CIF laser. Topics will include:

  • - Bitmap vs. laser-what is the difference and what does it matter to the laser?  What each format can do.
  • - Converting from bitmap to vector and vice versa, at least 3 ways to get a vector version of a bitmap graphic
  • - Creating graphics and determining the right graphic technique for the end-product and the material
  • - Basic Corel tools and techniques
  • - Transferring graphics from other graphic software, e.g., Illustrator and Inkscape
  • We will show how to complete the laser driver screens to get the most effective results considering the content of your graphics and the type of materials you are working with.
  • A paper hand-out will be provided.  Bring a project you want to work on, and if time permits we will work on yours as an example.

Some familiarity with other graphics or photo-editing programs is necessary. Some idea of the laser - whether actual experience or just observation - would be a plus.
