Cyanotype

Description:

Students will learn its historical context and value of cyanotypes in the development of photography & view 17th century and current examples of cyanotype prints; acquire the ability to make cyanotypes using easily obtainable materials; gain firsthand experience in the technical aspects of making cyanotypes from both black and white film negatives as well as digital files; and explore various toning techniques and take home at least one handmade print.

Attendees will provide either:

1. A well-exposed digital file, needed one week in advance of the class, from which the instructors will make digital negatives for use in class. The cost of this process is included in the class fee.

OR

2. A large format, normal contrast negative (4×5, 5×7, 8×10). Cost for B&W film and developing could vary substantially depending of format and whether chemistry needs to be purchased. 10 sheets of 4×5 film will cost approximately $30 and expect to spend $30 for developing chemistry. Previous experience in developing film is strongly encouraged if a student wishes to photograph with film.

Prior to the class your instructors will contact you in order to assist you in preparing the digital files.

Upon completion of this class, participants can use the darkroom to continue exploring and learning to create skills that add to the other mediums available at The Columbus Idea Foundry.

Safety Issues: Long sleeve shirts & full length pants, chemistry goggles (as per student’s discretion); vinyl gloves will be provided.

Prerequisite Skills: an open mind; an interest in the medium; and the ability to bake brownies (nuts are optional).
